blurred start button

Hi I have a problem with my laptop whenever I try to synchronize files
with a brief case that is saved on my network hard drive my laptop
freezes and the start button goes blurred and all icons from the
notification area disappear, I have to restart explorer.exe to
recover, any suggestions?
Running winxp home sp2
