I followed the advice here to rename uhcd.sys to something
else while in Safe Mode, and then restarting. I did get
the PC to boot and login without incident, but none of my
USB devices were working. I used the machine for a whole
day without any problems, but still without access to my
USB devices. On the Device Manager tab of Control Panel |
System, the on-board USB controller drivers had that
yellow exclamation tag. I tried to reload my USB drivers
from Windows Update instead of from disk, hoping that a
newer version of uhcd.sys might be found, but before the
install could complete, the exact same blue screen error
appeared and froze the system. Back in Safe Mode, I saw
that the identical uhcd.sys was re-installed, 33kb dated
6/19/2003.

I'm at a loss here. Any suggestions, folks? Could there
be some conflict somewhere that I am unaware of? I saw an
item in the Microsoft.com Knowledge Base about this for
Win98, but there isn't one for Win2000.

can't promise this is the solution. There is a USB timing issue with HP V40 series drivers and faster computers. HP has a hard to find patch that essentially slows down the process so the printer drivers load slow enough that whatever the timeing issue ceases. I have one Dell that does it and the patch solved the problem about 4 months ago. HP support has gone to heck and a handbasket since Fiona took over, I doubt if they have done more much to solve the issue because the V40 series is discontinued. We own about 10 of them. Only one has the IRQL issue but I found the excat problem on HP's site. steve
