I am trying to upgrade from Windows ME to XP home. During
the installation process, when the computer reboots, I get
a blue stop error screen.

After a number of tries, I put in a completely different
clean hard drive, with only Windows 98 on it -- no virus
checkers, device drivers or anything, and tried to upgrade
to XP from that. Same error message.

I'm assuming there is something in my hardware
configuration that XP doesn't like, but I can't find any
translation of the error codes anywhere. I'm running a
Pentium 3 with more than enough RAM.

The blue screen message is as follows:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the
first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart
your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these
steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly
installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check
your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and
terminated. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive
corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

I've done all the suggested steps except remove my
controller, which is a Promise Ultra 133, PCI card, and
which I obviously need.

Any idea from this message which hardware might be at
fault? Thanks very much.

did you hit F6 during the install to load the drivers for the controller?

Thank you for the suggestion, Ron. I've not done that.

At what stage of the installation would I hit F6? Wouldn't
the drivers already be there, as they were installed under
the earlier version of Windows?
