Blue screen of death during Vista install

I am installing the OEM version of Vista home premium 64 bit for a new build.
I get all the way through the installation to the part where the computer
reboots itself. This is where the install process hangs and keeps crashing
and gives me the BSOD. I get a STOP: 000... error. I did get a faulty
install done the first time by forcing the computer to reboot several times
and it did finish the install process. But it kept crashing and so I decided
to reinstall, which is where I am now, unable to cleanly install the program.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. As a check, I tested an old copy of XP
I have and that installed ok. I'm now thinking of going out and buying a new
copy of XP to install since Vista seems to not like my build.

I had similar problems. The BSOD (mine was multi-colored) appeared to
be caused by the machine trying to boot off the DVD after the first
install run.

Then I used the hard drive partitioning software that came with the
drive to partition and format the drive for XP, using NTFS. After
that, things went smoothly, except for the GPFs when accessing
unimportant things like help files.

So it was either giving Vista OEM a pre-prepared drive or the numerous
small creatures I sacrificed for good luck that fixed the problem.
