Hi - I had 2 DC's. 1 DC went down because of a hardware failure. The other
DC took over. I added DNS to the DC running. I had to reboot the server.

When it came up I got the blue screen.

I tried to just go to a dos prompt and still get the blue screen.

Is there anything I can do?

Would adding a DNS server cause this?

Thanks - I'm desperate.

Hello semi,

Did you try F8 after BIOS startup and choose Last known good configuration?
Also would be nice to know the error from the BSD.

Best regards

Thanks for getting back to me so soon.

I did try "last know good config" but got the same screen.

Here's what the screen says:

Stop: oxoooooo7b (ox85cfb430,oxcoooo102, oxoooooooo, oxoooooooo)
Inaccessible_boot_device

This settles it, DNS has nothing to do with the BSOD, Stop 7b is a hardware
driver error I would say it is for the hard disk controller, since you get
the Inaccessible_boot_device with it.

Tell me more about the system. Stop 7b's usually require a clean install,
but you may be able to update or roll back the hard disk controller (or RAID
Array controller) driver.

Many thank again…

I can’t believe I had 2 DC’s go down like this…anyway…

The server is a Dell Poweredge 2650. All the hw in this server is from
Dell.

I am running raid 5 – all the hard drive lights are green.

When I boot the server – the array controller starts.
Controller post operation successful build 3170
Displays “ 1 container found” – its running raid 5

The Windows screen comes up “windows 2000 server family”

The status boxes get to about ¾ of the way then I receive a blue screen.

Everything looks to be right.

I can’t believe that I still have users able to access a citrix server
without a DC…must be a TTL thing???

Thanks

Hmm, I have one of them sitting on my office floor I need to get up out the
bench.

The clients will use their cached credentials since they cannot locate a
DC..

Break out the Floppy disc for the RAID controller, boot it to the Windows CD
and run a chkdsk on the system drive and possibly a fixboot or fixmbr. You
will need the password for the directory services restore mode. If it still
has the Pre-install of the OS, it is kinda iffy to get a repair install on a
Dell from the Microsoft CDs but you have to start somewhere. I had a PE2900
eat my lunch for three days trying to fix a stop 7b. The worst part was if I
tried to restore a System State backup, the Stop 7b's would start again. I
hope you have better luck than I did.

Hi,

I have another server that I built that I was going to add to the domain to
use as a backup DC. I never got that far…Can I just bring this server up
using the same domain name and make it a DC and have a fresh install of AD
for my network? Or, is it much more complex than that?

Do you think I should work on the Dell before installing a new server? I
can’t find the Dell Raid CD – I’m going to have to contact Dell.

Right now, the main thing is my wkst’s can access the Citrix server. As you
said, because they can’t find a DC the clients are using “cache” to connect.
How long do you think this will last? What could cause this to no longer
work? As long as they can connect, this will buy me some time – I just don’t
want to loose it….

Thanks a bunch

The only way you can install the RAID drivers is from a floppy disc, you can
download the RAID drivers from Dell. Assuming it is one of the PERC
controllers, I may have the driver myself. The driver I have is for the PERC
5i and PERC 6. I haven't had a chance yet to get my 2650 up onto the bench
to find out which controller it has.

Cached credentials security in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in
Windows 2000:

You should have no problem as long as you don't try to change your password.
but this can be a problem if your password expires.

Hi again,

I ran Dell diag on the hardware and no errors were found. I mentioned that
I would like to re-install the raid drivers and this is what the Dell tech
support said:

" I understand that you would like to re-load a fresh copy of the raid
drivers , but there s no way of doing that without reinstalling the OS . "

Do you know of another way that I can re-install the drivers without
installing a fresh copy of windows? Maybe run windows repair mode or another
program that would allow me to re-install the drivers?

Try this:

Dell DVD ISO - Dell Systems Management Tools and Documentation (complete DVD
with Open Manage and the whole kit and kaboodle on one DVD). You can
download it to your server. Install and use something like UltraISO, extract
the ISO and run it directly or simply burn the DVD.
