Is it possible to block other users from viewing the pop-
up messages or detail in the meeting planner section of
scheduling an appointment with another user? Other than
making an appointment private?

What permissions are set on the Calendar folder? If you haven't granted Read access to the calendar, other users shouldn't be able to see any details.
