I have just been blindsided by a "stealth" update from Media Player 10 to
Media Player 11!

I did not want 11 because I do not like it! I received an update notice that
appeared like an update to version 10 but when it downloaded and began to
install it became clear this was version 11... a bit too late I might
dd! )(

I am very UNHAPPY about this! This was a dirty trick by Microsoft which I DO
NOT APPRECIATE!

Now that I have it I am trying to make the best of it without having to
resort to a messy uninstall and probably time consuming attempt to get my
version 10 back THE WAY I HAD IT!

The first thing that I noticed that really bugs me is this thing on the
selection bar called "URGE"! I DO NOT WANT THIS VISIBLE ON MY COMPUTER IN
ANY WAY AT ALL!! I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of it.

Does anyone know how to remove this thing called "URGE"?

I would appreciate any help here.

Otherwise, does anyone know the simplest and most reliable way to get rid of
MP11 and get back MP10 the way I had it?

Well, here's the obvious; did you create a RESTORE POINT any time before
the WMP11 installation? If so, go back to the good restore point!

Did you create a backup of some sort for Windows before installation of
WMP11? If so restore your backup!

Did MS do the courteous thing of giving you an option in 'Add Remove
Programs' to UNinstall WMP11? If so, uninstall!

Else, I'm outa' ideas!

Try Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. I don't recall if it's in the list
with all the MS Updates, or in the Add/Remove Windows Components to the
left. Once removed, you should have WMP10 back again.

companies like Microsoft!

First, I thought this was another minor "update" to WMP 10 not a total WMP
11 takeover or I would have hit the "eject button" as soon as I saw the
update notice pop up. So, no... I personally did not create any restore
points. Likewise with backups to my PC, the most recent being 1-Feb-07. I
did, however, see a brief reference to a restore point being created
automatically during the "update".

With regard to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel... yes there is now an
option for WMP 11 but once removed there will be, from what I can tell, no
Media Player at all since Microsoft decided to "courteously" remove version
10 completely in the process.

So... I suppose I could totally un-install WMP 11 then search and re-install
version 10 but I am sure all my playlists and the like would be gone in the
process.

changes I made yesterday to other areas of my computer? I can't be sure I
can remember everything else I did after this event.

Yes... there is an option now to un-install WMP 11 but version 10 is no
longer there so it would seem to me I would have no WMP on my system at all
afterwards. Perhaps I could find and re-install WMP 10 but it would seem all
my saved playlists would be toast. (

The restore point really is the best way. There should be very little
else, if anything it affects unless you installed software, or changed
other system settings. Doc's and such will be left alone.

if the wmp 11 install was done well, you CAN definately rollback to 10 via
add/remove programs. however, as you say, it often turns out bad. a
reinstall w/ the 10 full installer (on top of itself) usually fixes it up
tho. You can't use the 10 installer to roll back, it won't work, you have
to remove 11 first.

also, Urge has a seperate item in add/remove. [as does the MSN Music
Assistant]

also, using the right-most wmp 11 "menu button" (below the real menubar,
to right of Sync, it's an icon, not text), you can change to something
other than Urge; choose the old Media Guide, that's the default in 10.

WMP 11 is "different", vista-ish, and its user interface takes some
getting used to. Search is tough to get your head around, but it is
"advanced", just not initially intuative. I'd sugest giving it a chance
before tossing it. I hated it at first too! Still don't reccomend upping
from 10, but if you do then at least give it a chance.

and you are SO RIGHT, they should not have foisted it upon you without
being totally clear. in the same vein, if you go to the wmp web site and
click the download button it'll give ya 11, even when the link clearly
states 10! You really have to dig around to find the real link to 10.
But hey, that's MS, they have been that way for a decade - they know
what's best for you, just shut up and take it!
