Blaster worm aftermath

I recently had the blaster worm which i removed, however
it was extremely difficult as the techinician who was
working on my PC at the time kept restarting the
computer. To cut a long story short, all the services
were set to disabled which i had to manually correct, but
i feel there must be something else I'm missing to
correct aswell since the patch for windows which closes
the security issue of the worm, wont install. It doesnt
give any error message, it just closes after the screen
saying "Please wait while setup inspects your current
configuration...". Also, any antivirus/firewall software
I have will install but will almost immediately close
once I open it and it also is removed from the taskbar.

Can any one provide a list of things I need to check on
my system to get my PC back to 100% working order, maybe
i need to fiddle around with the services more, or change
something in the registry or msconfig?

Many thanks

Rus;
First, don't worry about a 3rd party firewall for now, enable the ICF
immediately:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673

Follow this link to ensure Blaster is gone:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/blaster.htm

Some viruses cause the symptoms of turning off the antivirus
application.
Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/hom...ZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ

If the problem is still there, check for and replace corrupted system
files:
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have the Windows XP CD available

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:
Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,
Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.

Finally check this link to help prevent this in the future:
