Something is apparently turned off somewhere, as I get web pages with blanks.
Whole pages can be blank. Each missing space is outlined and contains a small
square box in the upper left corner with a red X in it. This first appeared
after I removed a Virtumonde malware.

Yes, I had checked that pictures were turned on in the advanced tab, media,
they were.

I'm afraid it may come down to coursing through this second suggestion
I looked through it briefly and decided it would be something better tackled
with a clear head in the morning. Fortunately, I cloned the hard drive only a
day before the malware attack and can boot from that drive (D to do any snip
snips or reg repair comparisons/imports, etc. I find it very handy to clone
the C: drive for my back ups.

It's quite sad that in spite of running NOD32 and Spysweeper, I can still pick
up one of these damn time sinks. Those people who cause this kind of damage
should be jailed.

Thanks for your fast reply Jon and I'll report back any findings, though I
might be tempted to simply call the D drive C by updating a couple folders

OK, I think I better understand what happened. If I right click on to
properties in the empty spaces, it indicates HTML as type. Nowhere have I
found a picture missing. In fact, I've right clicked both .gif and .jpg.
pictures which are correctly identified. All empty spaces are HTML.

Now here's what I think happened. For the several days the virtumonde virus
was present, (yes, I'll call it a damn virus), the machine would periodically
lock up so hard that nothing but pulling the plug would free it. Nohow would
it reboot without doing this. Often I would have 20 or more pages on the bar
as I worked until the lockups. After one of these HARD reboots, I recall
Windows having a fit and telling me to run chkdsk to clear a corrupted file.
It then did that, as it rebooted, before I did it manually. The information
was rather quick and I didn't catch what was repaired. Prolly off pouring a
cup of coffee at the time.

After I removed Virtumonde, I ran JV16 tools through the registry to get rid
of any junk it left behind. I recall the list contained several dozen font
keys, which no longer had working files. JV16 has been so good over the years
that I never sorted the list, but removed everything listed. I had confidence,
because it backs up what it removes, (so long as I tell it to. Ah-o you see
what's coming? Apparently it was the font library that was crunched and to
make matters worse, I had removed their registration, so I couldn't simply
copy over the folder from the cloned drive. I'm guessing the holes in the
pages are from missing fonts? Does this sound reasonable? If so, how do I
restore the font library and reregister the fonts? Would installing the new
IE7 resolve this problem?

I've been reluctant to do an XP repair because my original disk is way before
SP2. Past experience has taught me to be wary. As last resort, I will simply
flip the cloned backup into service, but I checked it last night and find I
did a lot of work last week, with lots of email and it may be quite a bit of
work catching it up completely.

Can I repair the font library or determine if that is where this problem lies?

If you don't want to go that route, you could try to just get the fonts back
from your WinXP disc:

You can check to see what fonts you have installed in C:\Windows\Fonts

Also, in IE check Tools...Internet Options...General tab, Accessibility and
make sure every box there is unchecked. Also check your Fonts button and
see what's there. The default is "Latin Based", with "New Times Roman" on
the left and "Courier New" on the right.

I wouldn't install IE 7 as it's still in BETA and I wouldn't run the risk of
making a situation worse. And running a registry cleaner without it making
a back up..... :-(
