I'm using an HP Pavilion laptop with quite alot of icons/folders on the
desktop. Quite regularly, the screen will go blank and, after a couple
of seconds, the screen will be repainted.

Can anyone enlighten me as to cause/solution?

Are you running on AC (or DC, as the case may be in Melbourne) power or
battery power when this happens?

How old is the battery? Have you always stored the battery in its bay when
running on AC power.

It may be that your monitors screen refresh rate is set low. If it's set
to 60Hz try setting to the next higher setting your monitor can use.
To change it:
Right click on your desktop.
In the popup menu click Properties.
In "Dislay Properties" click the Settings tab > Advanced button > Monitor
tab (if present).
Select the next higher refresh rate in the refresh rate dropdown list.
Click Apply > Ok > Ok.

You may also have a tab with the name of your graphic/video device present
in the Advanced properties, you could also check there for refresh rate
settings.

Running on AC power - very rarely run off battery.

battery came with the laptop, which is 3 years old.

Yes, I keep the battery in when running on AC power - should I not?

I am running at 60Hz which is the only refresh rate available.

It could be something relatively innocent, like the driver
recovering from a fault. The black screen is while the
driver recovers. But it is also possible you're headed
for a hardware failure, and the driver recovery is
a sign of things to come.

Check in Event Viewer, and see if anything is logged there
with respect to the video.
