Blank login screen after system restore

Hi,

My hard disk drive failed so I replaced it with a new
one, formatted it, restored my files, OS and system state
from a backup and it boots!

But the login screen is empty where username and password
should be. There is no way to login.

I have tried repair from the CD as well as from my EMD,
no help. Reinstalling Windows 2000 and its applications
would be a MAJOR inconvenience on this workstation
containing many complex CAD suites.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
