In Windows pointing to the time on the Task Bar or an icon, etc. will
display a small window that provides aditional information. This no longer
happens on my computer. I get a blank window. How can I fix this problem in
Windows XP Pro?

Hi
1.. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2.. Locate the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3.. Right-click the right side pane, create a new DWORD value, and then
name it EnableBalloonTips.
4.. Double-click EnableBalloonTips, and then give it a value of 1.
5.. Close Registry Editor.
6.. Reboot

Hi, Just a thought, have you got firefox 3.5 installed?
If so see here

This problem is not related to the browser. I am talking about the
little text message that pops up when you point to something. For example,
when you point to the time on the task bar, the date will display. I still
see the text window but there is nothing in that window.

hi
Control Panel|Display|Appearance the "Tooltip" forecolor and backcolor are
probably set to the same.

If you completely restart your computer and then hover over the time,
does the display behave and then quit behaving later?

There is no indication of same colors; and, the color of the window
background changes depending on where you point. When I pointed to the
message area of this reply, the window was white. When I point at the time
on the task bar the window is yellow.

Sorry for the delay Jose my office is in the middle of a move.

The display always behaves. The entire screen is normal except the
message window has no message. I first noticed this problem after running an
anti-spyware program.

It sounds like some component of the system files were removed or
corrupted. It may have been accidental or it may have been infected
with malware; were you advised of the name/s of anything that was
removed?
-- What was the name?

--- Did you try doing a Restart as Jose suggested? What happened?
-- Which anti-spyware program and version of it did you run?
-- Did it find anything?
-- What did it find? Name? Anything about it.
-- Did you quarantine or delete the malware? If you quarantined
it, you can probably undo the fix and use a different tool for the scan.
-- Were there any error messages at any time?
-- Were there any other system failures about the same time?

Not stepping on Jose's toes here: I'm sure he could use the information,
too.

HTH,

Twayne`

I usually try to recreate the problem instead of suggesting things
that might work or things to try and can't see this one or make it
happen!

How about your other Taskbar icons - if you hover over them, do you
get the proper info or an empty box (is just the time part broken).

Are you able to double click the time display to launch the Date and
Time dialog (like in Control Panel) and is the info on all the tabs
correct?

Here are some other respectable AV programs to be sure it is not some
infection:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.
