The graphic for CD drive properties in my WinXP displays as
all-color-blue ("used space") on new, blank DVD-Rs. All six space and
capacity fields in that properties box read zero.

Attempts to copy files to the DVD-R return a notification that Windows
encountered a problem. The problem is not described in that
notification.

XP had created XP recovery DVD-Rs for me with no problems on blank
disks from that same spindle. I had not made any changes to the default
burn speed specification at that time. I tried turning the speed down
to 8X to remedy this current problem, but that created no cure.

Please post out an explanation and remedy for me and others who might
in the future search on this problem.

Windows XP does not support burning to DVDs.
What third party application were you using before?

No the OP was mistaken or misspoke.

As Shenan correctly pointed out Windows XP has no native capability to burn
DVDs and properly attempted to determine what third party software was in
use in an effort to be helpful.

It's only lying *if* the OP knew that previously and did not just assume
that they either (a) burned DVDs and not CDs or (b) Windows XP had done the
actual burning of the DVDs and not some program the manufacturer had
installed for this particular feature.
