Blank CD in not being recognized in CD drive.

I am attempting to record music on new blank CDs. When I
load a blank CD in either the Samsung CDRW/DVD SM 308B or
the Sony CD-RW CRX160E drives, neither Explorer nor
Windows Media Player 9.0 recognizes the loaded blank CD.
In Windows Media Player 9.0 there is a message that
states 'No Device Detected' and the drive messages
state 'No Disc in drive (E) or (F). I am running Windows
XP Pro. I have Norton Internet and Anti-virus software
active.

The same batch of blank CDs worked well with Windows ME
and the same devices prior to installing a new hard drive
and switching to Windows XP Pro. I have also tried
another brand's blank CDs with the same outcome.

Your assistance and advice is most welcomed.

Thank you,
Dennis

The ME PC may have something like
DirectCD/CD Creator installed. XP doesn't

XP's built in burning is llimited in what it can
do. And you dont usually format blanks to
burn music. If you have MP3's. You need something
like Nero or CD Creator, other program.

Firstly, be sure that recording is enabled... Right-click on the CD drive
letter, click PROPERTIES|RECORD tab.

For info on the capabilities and limitations of XP's built-in burner,
see... http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm

Topics covered include:

1. Fundamentals
a. The ISO File System
b. The UDF File System
2. The Inbuilt System in Windows XP
3. Reading UDF Format Disks in Windows XP
4. Third Party Software, & Upgrading to Windows XP
5. Writing & Using UDF Format Disks in Windows XP
6. Settings for the Inbuilt Software
7. Problems
a. There is no recording page...
b. My CD drives have vanished...
8. More Information

Additionally, you can find a small list of MS Knowledge Base articles on
troubleshooting CD problems by clicking "CD & DVD Drives" here:

Thank you for sharing your insight. I had set my CD
drives to enable recording. The settings had no affect
and the issue remained. I will review all the links that
you have referenced. I certainly need to learn more
about the capabilities and limitations of XP Pro and
Windows Media. I am learning not to take too many things
for granted.
Thank you again.

Thanks Paul. I was not aware that XP has recording
limitations. I will do additional research and if I need
to purchase third party software to record MP3 files, I
will do so. It is quite possible that the ME system had
CD Creator or another product installed.
Again, 'Thank You for your response.

XP's built in burning doesnt support
packet-writing Dennis. And therefore it
cant format CD's either. So, if you need
to format a CD, you'll need to use Nero/INCD
or CD Creator/DirectCD. (BUT not BOTH)

Most people dont format CD's, but sometimes XP
thinks otherwise! I use DirectCD and CD Creator
and Nero here. And have disabled XP's
built-in burning completely.

If you have something like a DVD player
and you want to watch DVD's on ya PC.

Then you need to use something like PowerDVD
or a program that views DVD's. Otherwise, Windows
Media Player, wont play DVD.

Media player is good for some things, not all. XP / Home Pro do have some
good things about them.

But CD burning / DVD viewing isnt one of them!
You still need 3rd party programs to make use
of these 2.Umm turn Autoprotect off as well.

As this will stop programs from working properly.

And will/can make installing programs fail.
