via 'Blackboard' . I am unable to open it on Windows XP / Internet Explorer,
and have been told or read that Internet Explorer 8 has some issue with
Blackboard??? I don't know??? Thanks, Shafe

If you don't have Microsoft Word, or don't have an editing program
that can open Rich Text Format (RTF), try the free Microsoft Word Viewer
program.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-f4f827f20cac

That program will allow you to *read* the file. I checked my copy here,
and the RTF format is mentioned in the file open dialog.

Such a tool doesn't allow you to make changes to the file. But
you will at least be able to read it.

If you're desperate, and wish to use a free tool, there is
always Open Office. I don't know how well it translates RTF.
This is like Microsoft Office, in that it attempts to duplicate
some of the functionality. But whether it would allow problem-free
document exchanges, I haven't a clue. The download size is 148MB,
and the platform used is Java Runtime (JRE). So this program should
also install Java on the computer, if it isn't already present. When
Java is present, you should make sure to keep the Java version up to
date, to get all the latest security patches and so on.

This article has some other suggestions for what will work with RTF.

In addition to Paul's good info ... Windows XP comes with a simple
built-in word processor called "Wordpad". You can use this program to
both view and edit Rich Text Format files (*.RTF). Wordpad isn't as
powerful as Microsoft Word, but it is installed by default on every XP
computer.

To start Wordpad, go to the start Menu, Accessories and find Wordpad in
the list.

Alternatively, find the EXE file at:
"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"
and double-click it.

Lastly, you can also start Wordpad by running the command "write" at a
command prompt.

Wordpad can view, edit and save plain text, RTF, and Word DOC files. It
has basic support for showing pictures and images in documents, but it
is somewhat behind full-featured word processors for handling graphical
data.

Still, you should always be able to view and edit an RTF file on an XP
computer, without any additional software. However, apps like MS Word or
OpenOffice would give you many additional features, if you need them.

Hope this helps,

Andrew
