After 2 years of no problems, (only) some of my tif thumbnails and previews started coming up black or partially black in the Olympus window (G:\DCIM\100OLYMP using Zio card reader) and in the window/s of any folder/s they had been moved/saved to. They are perfectly openable and viewable in all programs---the problem is just with the preview and thumbnails. Any folder I save/move them to from the Olympus window also gives a black preview and thumbnail. This is now true not only for new tifs, but for some tifs saved/moved from the Olympus window in the past (which used to show image in preview and thumbnail). This is now also happening with some of my tif scans (UMAX on VistaScan)
Tifs which were saved from Photoshop Elements or Presto! PageManager do not have this problem in any window
All the tifs with this problem seem to be unedited images which came from the camera/card reader or the scanner
Some but not all of the tifs which originated in the camera or scanner have this problem.
The tifs with black thumbnails and previews which are then opened and saved in Photoshop Elements or Presto! PageManager to any folder regain their images for thumbnail and preview. Those opened in and saved from Windows Imaging and Irfanview do not.
How can I get my Olympus window (and Windows Explorer in general) to show images for thumbnails and previews for all tifs again?
NOTE:
All jpegs are fine
The problem is not a function of the size of the tif file
Some single folders viewed in thumbnail view show some of their tifs as images, some as a small icon in the thumbnail square, some as partially black, and some as all black. This inconsistent tif behavior occurs in quite a few folders.
It is important to keep in mind that it's not a global problem---not for all tifs and not consistent even within one folder, let alone one program.
