Black screen when waking from sleep

I have a Toshiba notebook. It's about four years old, running XP. It was
fine until a few days ago. Now when I wake it from sleep I get a black
screen with a - in the upper left corner. If I pop the battery and then
power on it's fine. I have not added any new programs or changed anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
