I have been testing XP SP3 on several machine types and have encountereed a
reproducable issue on IBM laptops of the R Class. After installing SP3 the
system will boot, but if you run the lenovo system update tool and apply
updates the system will no longer boot and sits at a black screen with no
activity. System will boot into safe mode. I have tried disabling all
unnecessary services and startup programs to no avail.

The only solution I have found is to uninstall SP3.

It has been released as RC1 to the general public and before that it
was in a couple beta versions.

There's a forum dedicated to issues with SP3. You might want to post your
question there.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Good luck
