black screen hanging on startup

At my wits end. Help. Won't do anything. Can see hard drive is functioning
to a point then stops at the black screen. What do I do. Tried f2, f8,
f11, f12 keys to get some results and still didn't press the right sequence
of buttons to bring me back. Any ideas?
