During Windows boot-up after Windows Logo screen appears, screen goes black
for about 70 seconds. During this time there is no hard drive activity. It
takes 2 minutes 15 seconds for desktop to appear.

The same happens with a particular application which takes about 4 minutes
to open during this time there is a black screen for about three minutes
with no hard drive activity.

Word and Excel takes about 7 seconds to open. What is happening during the
black screen and what can be done about it?

Although my screen was not blacking out for your lengths, I was having
a similar problem of the screen blacking-out. In my case, it turned
out to be my video card. I'd since replaced it and it has not happened
since.

Perform a "clean boot" using the following procedure:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Does the computer start up faster? If so, go to the "Startup" tab and check
the boxes one at a time and reboot the machine until you find the application
that causes the poor performance. Google if you don't know what the entry is
for. You decide if keeping the application that bogs your machine down is
worth it. Uninstall it in "Add/Remove Programs" in Control Panel.

It seems long delay was caused by USB Card Reader connection. Unplugging it
reduces the black screen stays on. Also my Acronis True Image Home used to
take 4 minutes to open. Now it takes seconds.

If you have an Intel based system, it may simply be that you need to
install the chipset software from Intel's web site.
