Black screen on boot

I'm trying to get a new system up and running. This is the first time
I've had this problem where I get a black screen and nothing else. I
can hear the fans spinning and the HD spin up. The CPU fan also
spins. I'm not sure what I could have missed. Does anyone have any
idea?

hmmmm. Brian I don't see a problem with the way the OP asked their question
so I'm uncertain why you are directing Tony to the good post sites?

What I'd do is the following:
1) ensure the video cable is attached
2) ensure the video card is properly seated.
3) ensure the RAM is properly seated
4) ensure the CPU is properly seated
5) consult the motherboard manual to see how to clear the BIOS/CMOS and do
that
6) Unplug all unnecessary hardware and try booting the minimal setup. All
you need to have attached is the video and the power supply to the
motherboard. When you start the computer you should at least see the
beginning of the post.

If you still have a black screen you will need to start swapping in new
hardware.

You might want to post to a hardware newsgroup.

Kind of a terse reply for the OP's original question, isn't it? Did
you wake up grumpy today? Well, so did I — I went to the first site in
your signature and I notice the site designer did a really poor job of
making a site that's friendly to those users who, for one reason or
another, are using screen resolutions of 800x600. How does it feel to
be chastised for doing something you thought was "the right thing"?
BTW, I didn't stick around on your site, because I don't like
horizontal scrolling when viewing a site, not that I'm missing
anything really important.

The system is going to have XP, not vista. I see no problem with
asking here.

I can't beleive people still get cranky with usenet faqs.

Back to the original question.
Unfortunately, a number of problems can cause your problem.
A bad memory, a bad video card, a bad motherboard, a bad PCI card can all cause the computer not to
start.
In fact from the very limited information you gave, the only thing you know for a fact is that the
power supply works and the 12 volt bus on the mother board works.

First things to try.
1. Double check all card and cable connections.
2. Remove all non-essential cards (modem, sound card, etc.) from the bus (built-in motherboard
functions don't worry about.)
3. Remove all but one memory card.
Try the boot again.
4. Try another slot for the memory card.
Try the boot again.
5. Try another memory card.
6. Try another video card
I was assuming the monitor is know to work on another system.
Also if you write back for more help. Please give lots of detail on what hardware you have and what
steps you have tried to resolve the issue.

Actually that was meant for another post. Once in awhile I tend to forget to close
one and answer to the wrong one.
