Movie Maker often has problems handling Divx and Xvid encoded AVI files....
my rule of thumb is... if I can get it to my timeline as a single clip, I'll
render it to a new DV-AVI file or high quality WMV to be used as the source
file in projects.
Even then, Movie Maker will often crash during the rendering... if it
crashes on me 5 times in a row, I give up and convert the file with another
app.
See the Importing Source Files > Video > AVI page of my website.
