I've just recently noticed that I have a huge black space that turns white
and then, black and white vertical bars half way down my program list and
then lists the rest of my programs normally. Does anybody know what would
cause this.

There's a bad entry causing that. Looking at the list of programs, you
might be able to figure out which one is missing, since they're sorted
alphabetically. You could then remove, and possibly reinstall that
program, if there's a removal utility in the program folder.

Also look here:

Scroll down to "Add or Remove - White Space"
