bizarre USB problem

I'm borrowing my friend's machine, without an XP disk anywhere
around, and the USB refuses to work.

Here is what happens. When I start up it complains that an IDE channel
exists that it isn't familiar with. This is apparently the built-in
flash
reader. It can't find the driver for it and the HP website doesn't
have it either.

Then when I plug in my own USB flash reader, it can't find a driver
for that either, not on the hard drive nor online. Normally
XP recognizes my reader just fine.

This computer is an HP SR1349FR.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Rox.

First thing, do you have XP SP2 installed?
If not this may be usefull for the usb issues as well as critical for
security.

Let me know.

Yes. It's XP 2002 Family edition with SP2.

Thanks.

Not clear here - does the USB not work period, or only not work for the
flash reader?

If not period, I'd try uninstalling the usb controller device from
device manager and rebooting - that SHOULD force it to re-recognise the
USB device and reinstall it. I know windows in the past has had a
problem with USB device controllers going into hibernation of sorts
when not used for long periods of time.

If it's just the device type, try to find some drivers online. But the
previous cure should probably work if windows has built-in drivers for
the device (not sure).

Good luck.
