1. I figured the best way to work with another person in FP is to both
open the web from the server using check in/out and use publish to
backup to our hard disks. Is this correct?

2. I just opened up front page with my web on the sever and I still see
my older version of the home page. My partner updated this file hours
ago and hers is the one that is showing on the Internet. How can this
be? According to FP I am viewing the file on the server!?

it doesn't make any sense. try this;
open the server based web and hit tools/ recalculate hyperlinks (this does
more than recalculate the links) and also tools/ web settings/ advanced tab,
check the "delete temporary files" box.
