I have two new laptops running XP Pro on a peer workgroup.
There are several Win 2000 workstations in the workgroup. Some have
NTFS partitions, some have Fat 32 and some have both. From one of the
new laptops, I cannot copy files across the network from any shared
folders that are on NTFS partitions to a NTFS partition on the laptop.
I get the "cannot copy... Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not
full or write-protected" message.

Things I have done:
Turned off simple file sharing.
I can take ownership, but it still won't copy.
Turned XP firewall off, none other is running.
No encryption is enabled on the shared resources.
All permissions and security on the shares are set to everyone with all
enabled.

I can log onto the "other" new laptop as the same user name and all
works ok.
I can copy across the network from a share on a Fat32 partition to a
NTFS on the laptop.
I can copy across the network from a share on a NTFS partition to a
Fat32 partition on the laptop.

But it won't work NTFS to NTFS!
It appears to be some setting on the laptop and not related to
permissions on the shares.

Make sure that everyone has both share AND folder/NTFS permissions to the
share you want to copy to and that you are not logged on as a user that has
any deny permissions to the share or NTFS permissions either explicitly or
via membership of a group that has deny permissions. Also check the stored
credentials on the laptop with the share that you are trying to copy to in
order to see if you are trying to access a network/computer with wrong
stored network credentials. You can enter control userpasswords2 in the run
box and then go to advanced/manage network passwords to view your stored
credentials. I believe your problem is related to permissions as the
operating system does not care if you are copying from a share that is on
FAT32 or NTFS as long as permissions are correct and the user can
authenticate to the remote computer with the share and authentication
failures would be recorded in the security log of the remote computer as a
type 3 logon failure. To copy files to a share on an NTFS volume the user or
everyone [assuming you want everyone too have access] would need at least
read/change share permissions and write NTFS permissions or a generic
permissions that includes write such as full control.

Thanks for the response Steve,

On the laptop I am trying to copy to, there are no stored credentials
Also, I am not getting a "failed login" event logged on either the
laptop or on the computer where the share resides.

I am using zero lenght password. Does that matter?

I don't have any problem copying the files from the NTFS share as long
as I copy them to a location on the laptop that is not NTFS. (or vise
versa).

Ok I finally figured it out.

The shared resources are on systems running Kaspersky antivirus (no
firewall). Appearently, Kaspersky writes alternate data streams to
files under it's protection that reside on NTFS partitions. The few
files I found on the share that did not have the alternate data streams
would copy to the NTFS on the laptop ok.

The quick fix was to install Kasperski anti virus to the laptop.

I'm guessing a quark with XP because other laptops running 2000/NTFS
never had this problem.
