Sorry to come to this late, as I see a lot of appeals for
help.
Here are some things I've learned by falling in holes and
scrambling out - with a lot of help from Belkin (I have
Belkin wireless USB adapters).
When I started I had an XP and a 98SE machine - I did get
this working, but the Belkin instructions were a bit
optimistic "just insert the CD and use the wizard". I
wanted to share files, share a printer and share a
broadband modem on the XP machine. It all works now -
except one glitch covered in another posting.
First, can you ping from one computer to the other and get
a reply? You get the IP addresses by running IPCONFIG
under dos on each machine. If you can, theres only
microsoft software issues ahead.
If not, check the configuration of the wireless adapters -
do they name the same channel, SSIS, etc? Can you do
a "site survey" and detect the other adapter? If not,
call the vendor!
I had to turn on the guest account on both PCs, and set
sharing on the directories and printers I wanted to share.
Turn off your firewall - if everything works with it off,
then configure it to allow computers on your network
through.
Turn off the Microsoft firewall on both machines.
My Belkin adapters installed by default picking up an "SMC
EZ..." driver - unplug and start again until the correct
Belkin driver picked up.
Have you named the gateway IP address for Internet
Connection Sharing - it needs to configured on the non-
modem machine to point to the lan adapter on the computer
with the broadband modem (not sure what you have to do if
you use a router).
Have you enabled DNS on the non-modem computer? I found I
could get to the internet by specifying an IP address, but
not through a url. Enable dns and name the IP address of
the lan connection for the modem-connected computer.
I can be more specific if anyone wishes,
Regards, Colin
