I have inherited a Compaq machine whose BIOS is password protected!
How can I get past the password? Or better yet how can I reset the
BIOS to not require it?

Of course I am asking because I have no idea what the password might
be.

Well, so far, only you know the model number. Why not go to the
manufacturer's web site to see if they have a manual for download. In
it might be the instructions that tell you how to reset the BIOS. Often
it involves jumpering a 2-pin header on the motherboard but other
methods have been used. Compaq got acquired by HP in 2002 but a
separate compaq.com site is still maintained. To find support, like
documentation, you'll have to specify the model number.

Most PCs forget the BIOS/bootup password if you remove
the CMOS battery for 60 seconds.
