have installed a new hard drive at the advise of HP for pavilion zd8000
laptop, as original HD failed BIOS comprehensive test after crash. Made
install with recommended new HDD, BIOS recognizes and HDD passed test, but
unable to reboot (restore) with XP pro system disc provided with original
purchase of laptop as sytem tries to reboot from LAN, not optical drive,
which has been reset. tried to set back to defaults through BIOS screen,
laptop still tries to reboot from LAN (never was connected to LAN). HP
service has failed to provide any more suggestions (maybe cause they already
had me spend on new HDD ) other than to spend more visiting BestBuy service
dept. The DVD/CD drive is working, but I have failed to get system to choose
it for reboot/restore . Any advise is appreciated.

In the BIOS, set your computer to boot from the optical drive first. I
have never heard of a situation where the boot order has failed. If it's
not working for you, you're either doing something wrong or there's more
to the story.

That's strange, never heard of boot order not being honered; but your
descrip stops at setting "defaults". If that's where you stopped, go
back into the BIOS and give the whole thing a good lookover for drive
options. Keep notes on any changes you make so you cna ptu them back if
you need to.
Any chance there is a Load Saved Settings or anything like that you
can try besides the default? Might be worth trying.

1. BestBuy: Not the best place to get a machine repaired - for next
time, try to find a local shop with a good rep.

2. Look the names of the drives over closely in the setup screens.
Make sure the CD drive is enabled, and of course set it as the first
boot device. Drive names can sometimes be confusing and can be mixed
up. Assuming there is an option there for the LAN boot, turn it off so
it won't get in the way again.

If you still can't work it out, tell us what BIOS you have; Phoenix or
?? etc.. Then someone with the same BIOS could probably give you some
step by steps to look at. Usually you'll see the BIOS name on the boot
screen when you start the machine. System Information I think gives it
too, and I know BelArc Advisor and those types of programs do. I use
SIW which is a nexcellent app. Google to locate any of them.

I don't see how you can restore from a new hard drive. You need to do a
clean install.

Thanks all for the replies.
It is a Phoenix bios (not yet raised from the ashes).
It is a clean install that I was trying for, but even when I selected the
CD/DVD drive as the place to start, it ignores that selection.
