I mistakenly posted into XP NG, now I pull it back here:

I got Vista Ultimate version on my AMD 3200+, 4 GB RAM.
My harddisk is Seagate 320 GB SATA - 16 MB RAM cache.

Yesterday my machine was running fine, then I shut it down.
Removed my cordless PS2 keyboard and mouse, plugin my newly bought MS 2000
keyboard desktop into USB. Turn on the machine, only into the BIOS and got
the error message on the screen:

Windows Boot Manager
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause. To fix the problem:
1) Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer
2) Choose your language settings, and then click "Next"
3) Click "Repair your computer"

If you do not have the disc, contact your system administrator or cimputer
manufacturer for assistance.
File:\Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration
data"


This is the additional information of my PC, my seagate harddisk from time
to time pops up to me that I need to back up my harddisk as my harddisk has
problem. And I am not sure does it also related to my RAM. Or just
coincidence.


Also I tried to use another harddisk in which XP was installed and has no
problem in booting up my PC. So it only happened in my Vista harddisk, I
have no clue it relates to Vista OS or my harddisk or my RAM.

Sounds very clear that your hard drive is dying and has been warning
you. Describe more this pop up about your hard disk having a problem.
Can you get to a boot menu that lets you run a diagnostic utility? Can
you take your Vista HD and put it in some other system and check it? I
would suggest not trying to let it fix anything yet, just get a handle
on the problem. If you can read it to some extent in another system
get your data off while you can.

Hi,

The pop up in the Vista is there is a option to 'backup' in the top half,
then 'reminder later' in the bottom half, on the bottom right is a cancel
button.

I thought the change of cordless keyboard and mouse set caused the problem
because the boot problem just right after I plug in the MS 2000
Keyboard/Mouse into the USB and power on my PC, this is just the time it
happened.

Now even I plug in back my previous LabTec Keyboard/Mouse back to PS2 port
it did not fix the problem.
What I only got was the BIOS error message.

I just downloaded the Sea Tools for DOS to see if I can do a long test to
find out if the harddisk is dead.

And in the same time, I'll use the XP harddisk to boot and if I can see the
Vista harddisk data(I got 2 internal mobile rack so I can just plug the
Vista into the 2nd rack and XP harddisk into the 1st rack to boot)

Agh! No, do not do that. You need to run chkdsk from a command prompt or
from the Recovery Environment.

Just a silly question, but have you reverted the system to the original
hardware configuration yet?

No, don't try that. You can run chkdsk from within the desktop GUI. Right
click on the icon for your Seagate hard disk, select Properties, click on
the Tools tab, click on the Check Now... button in the Error-checking
section, if you have UAC enabled and the UAC dlg box pops, click the
Continue button, deselect any check boxes that are checked in the Check disk
local disc X:, where X is the letter of your drive, dlg box, let it run,
report findings back here.
