I decoded to take a chance and install IE7 on my laptop. The laptop
is a lot easier to do a complete reinstall of everything in case some
installation/program goes crazy.

Now, under my windows directory I have one hidden directory called
"ie7" which is 21.5 MB in size and a regular (unhidden) directory
called "ie7updates" which is 41.9 MB in size. That essentially eats
up a lot of my small sized laptop hard drive space.

I am assuming these directories are backups to the installation and
updates so if everything seems to be running OK, can I get rid of
them?

First off, if you haven't done so already you might want to post this question
to the Internet Explorer 7 newsgroup. Check your news server for this newsgroup.

That said, my understanding is that those folders are there for exactly what
you've guessed. If you decide to uninstall IE7, those folders would have to be
there in order to restore version 6 of Internet Explorer on your computer. An
option would be to backup those folders to CD before deleting them just in case
you ever needed to uninstall IE7.

On another note, those two folders would be way down on my list of things to
remove in order to gain space on a system's hard drive. Have you decreased the
amount of disk space allocated to System Restore and Internet Explorer's cache?
