My boss has given me a *big* headache!

We have just given each manager a desktop with outlook 2007 installed. Now,
the managers have to manage their own emails, instead of getting the
secretary to help them read/reply.

However, my boss wants to know whether they clear their emails daily or if
their inbox is filledl with lots of unread emails.

One solution I can think of is to extract the unread mail counter from each
manager's desktop & presented to him. Is that possibile? I read about the
counter might not reflect accurately but at least I have some figures to
show. The problem is i do not know how to extract those counters.

The other possible solution is configure outlook to auto-send a notification
when an unread email is read. However, I can't find any rule to do it.

Hope someone here could advise me. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Mykame.

Sorry I forgot to add that we are not running any exchange server. We are
using pop mail with outlook 2007. Thanks.

This sounds like a management and communication issue not an IT one. How
about the boss stops micro managing these managers and lets them get on with
their work.

If you want some direction on how to motivate (rather than monitor) people
to perform well, let me know.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your response.
I can understand your thinking. However, I would say it's more of 'used to
old way of doing things'.

Previously, emails are printed by secretary & circulate among managers &
they have to acknowledge reading them.

At least I manange to convince him to do away with the printing.
(save a few trees

Anyway, my boss is not so IT-savvy so it's a way for him to feel that "IT
works!"

Could the boss set their system to use Read Receipts for the crucial emails?
Then they will "know" if people have bothered to read the stuff they get
sent by their boss.

I am not sure how that works without Exchange though.

windows xp? I'd probably read the unread message counter - its not all that
accurate (has last boot count) but it's easier to read the registry than use
VBA to count and send a form. Both methods can be manipulated - they just
need to mark everything read - but they may be enough to satisfy the
manager.

Thanks Diane.
We have both xp & vista machines.
I guess that counter might be sufficient for my boss. However, how can I go
about extracting it from each machine from my workstation?

Thanks July.
It's those emails sent by external to the managers that are cruical.
Emails sent by my boss can use the Read Receipt way.
