Hi,

I have a desktop with an MSI MS-6380E mainboard. I am looking at buying
another HDD, say 160-200GB.

Does anyone know if the board will support this size, or where I can find
this information.

My system is XP Pro, still SP1 at the mo'.

TIA

Bob

Certainly MSI can provide an answer on their Web site..

Typing 'MSI MS-6380E mainboard' into a Google search reveals the following
statistic:

Results 1 - 10 of about 988 for MSI MS-6380E mainboard. (0.16 seconds)

The very first link will take you straight to it..

Thanks Mike, but I don't see what you do.

I only got 530, and the first is the MSI site which tells me it supports
ATA133, with upto 4 IDE devices. This doesn't tell me an ything about size.

Am I missing something?

Go to the website.. the first blue bar underneath the MSI logo has links on
it.. go to SERVICE and select FAQ.. Look at the FAQ List and select
MAINBOARDS.. at the next screen.. select the SOCKET TYPE or ARCHIVES
depending on how old your board is.. clicking on any link on these pages
brings up sections relating to computer hardware.. you want HDD support..

Re-post with how you gotten along with it..

Mike,

Okay, I have worked my way through that and found what looks promising. But
....

Looking at the site, it offers a variety of socket types or archives. One of
these is Socket A. Using SiSoft Sandra, my system looks like an AMD Athlon
XP2200+, Socket A PGA, Generation G7. I can't see anything in the socket A
list that looks familiar, items such as K7NZG are not meaning anything to
me.

Thanks for your patience with this.

Bob

Did you check out the boards listed under the 'Archives' tab.. I looked
through some of the list and, as supplied, they all appear to support 160gb
'out of the box'..

If it said it support ATA133, I am sure it can support HDD larger than 137GB.

This took less than 1 minute:

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_search.asp

MB (AMD K7)

KT3_Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E)
KT3_Ultra (MS-6380E)
K7T266_Pro2-A (MS-6380E)
KT3_Ultra2-R (MS-6380E)
KT3_Ultra2 (MS-6380E)
KT3_Ultra2-BR (MS-6380E)

Your mainboard is one of the 6 listed above: The original box will have the
"KT3 ......" info on it. Additionally if you take the case cover off you
can visually compare your board to the boards pictured in the six options.
Once you identify it you may wish to write it down for future reference.
Hint, look between the pci slots some boards list the common board name
between the slots.

P.S. you may wish to invest the time in downloading the manual if you don't
have it.
