"big disk" data loss

Moved an NTFS 250GB drive to a W2ksp4 system that that I failed to check for
the EnableBigLba registry patch. Of course, the parameter wasn't there.
Now the drive is listed as "healthy", but unformatted. Any realistic
expectations for relatively simple recovery without sending the drive to 3rd
parties? The potential data loss is inconvenient, but not critical.

Place another harddrive in the same machine or have space to copy to on an FTP site.
Boot of a knopix Linux boot CD.
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

then, if you are using another harddrive mount it as read/write, or just ftp the stuff from the 'bad' hard drive.

If knopix does not see the file system on the damaged drive, then you are going to have to ship the drive to someone.
