Big Brother is the simplest tool for monitoring your IP-network for
troubles. It gives you a comprehensive picture of what happened to any
point on the Net that you put in. Just add the host of interest by
specifying it's IP address or hostname and optional short description
for your information.

Here is a brief summary of Big Brother features:

Uses ICMP ping to monitor hosts.
Not being a swiss army knife of network monitoring Big Brother isn't
loaded with complicated features of no use
Has a misleading name
Organizes hosts into a hierarchical tree, giving you comprehensive
picture tailored to suit your needs and please your aesthetic feelings
Propagates properties pertaining to ancestors to descendants unless
overridden
Presents the results as a graphical view and logs relevant events into
file
Can run in background, taking up a 256 pixels of screen nicely packed as
a 16x16 square in your notification tray area
Open source for those willing to add missing features, fix bugs and
examine code for potential flaws and fun
