Hello everyone,

I have just had a problem with my xp install and i chose
to do a repair operation on it using my original disc.

Now, xp will not see my 160 gig data drive when booted
and there is so much valuable info on there....i simply
cannot emphasize how much sentimental info is there.

The drive is not faulty at all.

Help.

To see a drive larger than 137Gb three things are required: the BIOS must
see it, WinXP SP1 must be installed, 48-bit LBA must be turned on.

When you did the repair install you must have reverted to XP with no SP1 and
48-bit LBA is not included.

Exactly, the repair will remove SP1. You need to reinstall SP1 and all
of your data will show back up. It is still there and you don't need to
do anything with the BIOS. If you were seeing full capacity before,
everything is set up correctly.

But did you activate 48-bit LBA?

SP1 enables 48bit LBA. You don't have to activate it.

Hi Andrew:
I just replied to another post, and thought you might be having the same
problem. You called the 160 gig HDD your 'data' drive. Is it not your boot
drive? If it isn't, your boot drive may have been formatted as one system
(NTFS or FAT32) and your data drive is still the other. Windows will only
'see' HDDs of the same system. What you need to do is convert one or the
other drive so that they are the same (either both FAT32 or both NTFS) I
believe there is a 'convert' option on the XP disk that will do this without
destroying data. Since it can't 'see' the 160 g disk, you'll probably have
to convert the boot drive so that you can see them again.

If the 160 IS your boot drive, then I'm lost!
