Read somewhere that Vuescan's method for profiling from a IT8 target is a
less accurate method than other profiling programs.
Are there other programs out there which will generate more accurate ICC
files from scan of an IT8 target?
I tried "littleCMS" but it seemed quite cumbersome.

Eric:

VueScan creates what is called a matrix profile -- that is one that
defines the the white point and the individual RGB gammas. The other
profiling programs you refer to also create a CLUT (color lookup
table) that gets applied to the image.

You will have to go through the basic same steps to create a profile
whether you use littleCMS or another similar program. Sure there are
a few extra clicks in littleCMS, but I'd not say it is 'quite
cumbersome'. It is superior freeware. After all, you shouldn't have
to profile everyday. Other profiling programs are sold by Monaco,
Praxisoft, and Colorvision to name just 3.

you are right - I gave littleCMS a second chance. It does work.
Is it all that better than Vuescan's ICC technique?

Maybe not for camera/negative profiling (the new beta version of lcms
seems to handle cameras/negs much better). Here the rather simple
approach of VueScan might be more robust and thus work more reliable
than lcms. For normal slide/reflective scanner profiles lcms is usualy
much better, actually, much better than most commercial profilers
sold.

For a comparison of scanner profilers check out
