What is better Athlon XP or Athlon 64 ? Binary incompatibilities ?

Which CPU needs less power and hence produces less heat:

Athlon XP or Athon 64 ?

Sorry for this newbie question: Are all programs which run on Athlon XP
able to run on Athlon 64 as well or are there binary incompatibilities ?

Both CPU's exist in low power versions, but overall, the newer processors
yield much more instructions per watt.

There shouldn't be any incompatibilities between Athlon XP optimised code
and the newer CPU's.

Power consumption, depends more on speed, and chip 'version'.
An XP 3200+, is rated at 76.8W, while the Venice core Athlon 64 3200+, is
rated at 67W. However, the Clawhammer, and Newcastle core A64 chips draw
more (89W).
The Athlon 64, has the extra 64bit instructions, but in 32bit mode, runs
identical code.

Best Wishes

You can buy some pretty hot Athlon 64s, but for the same performance,
I would say that the Athlon 64 is cooler, and you can use Cool'n'Quiet
to lower the clock rate and voltage, running it even cooler; it also
depends on the Athlon 64. The 90nm types are cooler than the 130nm
types.

The Athlon 64 is 100% compatible, anything that runs on a 32 bit processor
can run on the A64.

The amd64 is superior in every way.
You can always run 32 bit applications if you are using OS with poor
compatability and the amd64 runs a lot cooler when at less than 100% cpu
utilization.

The Athlon 64 will generally run from less power, but there are mobile
low-power XPs as well as Athlon64s, so you have to come up with 2 specific
processors to get a definitive answer.

Yes they will run fine.
