Beta 1 Interferes with CD Burning

I was preparing a monthly back up, and found that neither
Nero 5 nor XP's built in CD writing software would burn
CD's (Nero Failed and XP CD writer just hung), and the
reader wouldn't read disks created perfectly months ago.
Searched all over the place and then thought I'd try
disabling anti spyware beta1 (1.0.615) with definitions
5745 and now all is ok.

Frustrated that it took 3 hours, but at least I've learnt
something. Is it a known problem?

Same problem with Nero hanging after what seemed to be an
ok burn, failed on verify always at the same spot,
various different media, hung computer, could not access
DVD drive [it set the DVD drive back to a CD drive!] and
needed to reboot the system to reset everything. No
information on same from Nero or the DVD manufacturer -
only found out by taking one component out of the loop
one at a time - used a lot of DVD and CD media.

You're not likely the only one, nor even one of a select band, using either
Nero or the inbuilt burning facility to burn CD's.

I had one failure burning a DVD on a machine with Microsoft Antispyware
running, but I attributed that at the time to the fact that a scheduled scan
by a beta antivirus app kicked off while I was burning.

I'm not disagreeing with your observations, but I suspect this may be an
issue with a particular install--are you seeing other performance issues
with Microsoft Antispyware active?

I'd consider uninstalling and reinstalling to see whether this changes. I'd
feel a whole lot better about that prescription if you had a way to spot
whether the performance issue still exists other than by making coasters.
Maybe try R/W media??

Did a full recovery and reinstall without MSAS / Giant
and the problem went away [on an Asus A3N] but I can
still use the MSAS on an MSI build desktop, tried various
brands of media for defect analysis etc, etc, and came to
the conclusion that it is something specific to the MSAS
real time scanning tools and the Mode sense line of the
notebook TSST DVD drive - circa 2/04 [an old build and no
firmware upgrade]. Burning DVDs, I normally kill any
excess running processes to help performance. I think
that this problem has several factors - DVD media
quality, flaws, DVD old firmware for media ID / mode
sense line and simply doesn't like umpteen programs all
running around looking for potential spyware. What I did
not mention is that there is a cache problem when the DVD
burn fails and the drive 'reverts' back to a CD drive and
hangs up with the last insert content information which
only a reboot will fix. It's a curious problem rather
than anything else.

Wierd. FWIW, I burn DVD's on a Dell Inspiron laptop with a sony drive
without issue with Microsoft Antispyware active.

I do know that over the course of the beta, some individual installs of
Microsoft Antispyware seem to evidence severe performance issues on some
machine--i.e. blowing it away and reinstalling makes them go away. There've
also been reports of issues with particular antiviruses and Microsoft
Antispyware together--mostly in terms of a hit on scan time with either
product.

Bill and "JM" thanks a lot for the info - seems like we
are on to something, however I was only posting my
experience - your answers are a bit too techy for me
(despite a degree in engineering, but not computation!).
Maybe will try an uninstall/re install as suggested, or
will just disable when burning. I use Mcafee virussscan
7.0 if that is connected as suggested. Otherwise wil
persevere with MSAS, although it never finds anything on
a scan - either because it keeps it out, or my regular
use of Ad Aware is a better defence, and still does find
stuff that MSAS does not.

A couple of comments--technical, I'm afraid:

1) Ad-aware scans for cookies. Microsoft Antispyware does not, in the
builds distributed thus far.

2) Shutting down Microsoft Antispyware via right-clicking on the icon does
not completely remove all the code supporting real-time protection, I
believe. So--it may be a fix for you or not. If you have found that this
works--that's terrific!

Go into My Computer. Rightclick on your CD-DVD burning drive and select
Properties. Go to the Recording tab. If the box for "Enable CD recording on
this drive" is checked, please uncheck it as this could be a conflict
between XP's native CD burning capability and Nero's burning capability.
That could solve part of your problem.
