I currently use XP Pro, which seems okay, but would I be best to stick
with it for a new PC or is Vista "better" for games? I realise that
"better" is vague and subjective at best but people must have
opinions/experience.

Well Windows Vista is an all around better OS. It won't make your gaming
any different though, unless you wanted to play the games that are only
available for Windows Vista, Halo 2, Geometry Wars etc.

At least until the DirectX 10 games (like Crysis) start shipping later this
year, then, with the right hardware the games will look a lot better on
Windows Vista compared with XP.

If you're a parent wanting some control over what your kids do on the PC,
Vista has parental controls and can lock out games with specific age ratings
or content.

Avoid Home Basic. Home Premium or Ultimate.

If you're looking to upgrade your existing PC, make sure to do some research
first, download the compatibility checker, make sure your hardware has Vista
drivers etc.

Vista is aso a lot more demanding, so if you don't have a
bang-up-to-the-minute system you might find you'd be better off with XP
Pro if you want to run processor and graphics intensive games.

I've got Windows Vista running on three year old machines I use for LAN
gaming, don't notice the difference performance wise.

That's cool then. Still gobbles up more disk space than XP though, I'd
have to uninstall at least three games if I wanted to fit Vista onto my
box. <g>
