I am running Windows XP and set up my PC to work with a Road Runner cable
modem and a Linksys Wireless -B Network Kit (Model W11SAPC11). I did it with
the Networking Wizard by:
1) clicking on "Set up a home or small office network."
2) Selecting "This computer connects to the Internet thorugh another
computer on my network or through a residential gateway."
3) Determne the appropriate connections for me (Recommended)
4) Naming my computer and describing it and giving it a workgroup name.
5) Windows did the rest.
This left me with a
* LAN connection to a Realtek NIC card, bridged
* A network bridge to a MAC Bridge Miniport
* 1394 connection, bridged
FYI, wireless is disabled on the router at this time; haven't bought a
wireless laptop yet but I do have an old laptop connected with an Ethernet
cable.
Did I set this up correctly? I ask because my googling seemed to indicate
bridged networking isn't really needed and is a security risk -- and there
is no way to turn the XP firewall on now. But when I thought maybe should
select "Other" -- and then "This computer connects to the Internet
directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also
connect to the Internet directly or through a hub" -- Windows recommended
against doing that, so I didn't.
I do have Norton's Anti-Virus and Personal Firewall installed, so the
firewall issue is covered. Did I set my PC up correctly to work with a
router? If not, how should I set it up?
