Every now and then I have to delete my online site and repub the whole
thing as my server somehow gets all mixed up. I would like to be able to
save the online page hit counters as I hate to loose the counts. If I
publish the live site to local, remove live, then republish will the
online counter data be uploaded as well?

For your security and peace of mind ALL emails are automatically
scanned with the latest Norton AV Virus Definitions.
Not that I have any virus' but why not be careful!
I get virus signature updates regularly!

You have to make sure that you publish the _private folder. The hit counter
data is stored in there with filenames that match the name of the file that
contains the hit counter but with a .cnt extension. If for some reason you
loose it, you can go into these files and edit the number to match the hit
counter number that you would like.

Hope this helps,

Or, you can upgrade to a 3rd party hit counter that stores the hits on
its server.

I have been looking for an excuse to give major kudos to
statcounter.com, which has a very functional free service (with some
$$$ upgrades) that keeps and displays all kinds of hit statistics. Much
more than just hits. Very clever stuff. No affiliation, just a happy
user.

If I publish the entire site from local will the _private folder be
published as well or do I have to select it for publishing? I use FP2K.
I know the .cnt files can be edited however I would have to know the
counter data from every page and I have a large site so that isn't
really an option. I need to make it automatic.

If you want the files to publish, check that the files are NOT marked
as "Don't Publish"
View->Reports->Publish Status
You can change the status on this report to allow files to publish or
not. (Click on the record to highlight it, then click again on the
status value.)
FrontPage will publish every file marked as Publish, except those that
have not been edited since the last publish if using "Changed Pages
only".
