best way to delete an e-mail and get it out of inbox

when I do ctr D or the X messages get a line thru them, but remain in inbox.
How do I just get it out of the inbox altogether OTHER than going thru
edit/purge/enter?

Presumably you have an IMAP email account. That's how IMAP works.
The only way round this is to hide messages marked for deletion.
