a general consensus at a.c.f? perish the thought (and i mean that in a
very positive way)

my own favourite is winamp. the gui (i'm using the latest version but with
the old classic skin) is very user friendly. i would however suggest that if
you do opt for winamp that you select the 'custom install' option and
install only the components you actually want.

No, but a few seems to stand out:

XMPlay http://www.un4seen.com/
foobar2000 http://www.foobar2000.org/
Winamp http://www.winamp.com

I've been using XMPlay for a couple of years. Tried everything else, but
keep coming back to this tiny, great sounding sounding player.

It's the best.

Truth is there for finding, but the logic that's involved
is a mystery unwinding, not a problem to be solved.

Both WinAmp and 1-by-1 are popular here:

If you have WinXP or 2000 -
Foobar2000 with Kernel Streaming component downloaded and activated.

It appears there is a concensus for Winamp but personally I've been using
dbpoweramp for a few years, happily. A few glitches here and there, but it
works for me. Unfortunately they now have to charge for the mp3 music
decoder.

This program also works if you simply add the free lame decoder into the
plug in folder for dbpoweramp. You don't have to pay and it isn't much
different then adding a plug in to any of the other players.

No, not so you would notice. I guess WinAmp and XMPlay get the most mention,
but some strongly dislike WinAmp. I haven't heard from anyone that strongly
dislikes XMPlay.

My favorites are

Billy http://www.sheepfriends.com/?page=billy

XMPlay http://www.un4seen.com/

Billy is very fast, XMPlay is slower but has more features and skins.
