My mm2 onlaptop p4 win xp home seems to hang up while
capturing manually from a sony dv hi8 camcorder. I am
wondering whether it would be simpler and faster to just
record the whole tape automatically and then edit the
clips in mm2 to avoid this problem.

A Sony Hi8 camcorder is an analog camcorder, even though the word digital is
on it. You must also be using an analog capture device because it doesn't
have a firewire connection.

What analog capture device are you using with it? Or are you using a Sony
digital 8 camcorder with a firewire connection?

I don't know what I was thinking of, but the camcorder is a Sony "Digital 8" DCR-TRV315 NTSC with a DV connection, which I believe is a firewire connection

I've been capturing all day to DV-AVI by using the automatic capture feature and then editing the clips. although the capturing goes smoothly, editing each clip takes a long time because I am just editing a sample of clips and the time on the clip does not show the elapsed time which does not match the original tape

So, I started capturing manually from a Canon ZR70, which went much faster, initially. But, about midway through the MiniDV tape, the capturing wizard freezes after I stop capturing to advance the tape to the next part of the tape to capture. I tried adjusting the project save setting from 1 minute to 7 minutes, but this did not prevent the wizard from hanging up again

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am saving to a Maxtor 80gig external drive because the free space on my laptop is only 16gig

Now I am going to try capturing the balance of the tape before importing the saved project to see if this makes a difference

You might try capturing with the WinDV utility - there's a link to it on my
Digital Camcorders > Intro page.
