Hello,

I am looking for sites that have an "a-list" of PC hardware, like the one on
the UK's PC Pro web site at www.pcpro.co.uk.

Basically I'm looking for the best kit available at the moment, e.g. not
only graphics card, motherboards, etc. but IDE cables, fans and cases.

Does such sites exist, can anyone help?

That's an interesting list, not that I agree with all the choices. Since I was
purposely trying to kill a little time while looking busy, I checked prices at
Newegg and a couple of other sites for stuff Newegg doesn't have.

Here are the results for an Intel-based system:

Motherboard - Abit IC7 Max3 - $210
Heatsink - ThermalRight SLK-900U - $38
RAM - Corsair XMS4000 PC4000 - $704 (ZipZoomFly) for 512MB x 4 (1GB in each
channel)
Video Card - ASUS V9950 (nVidia FX 5900 Ultra) - $400
Monitor - NEC/Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 22" DP 2070SB-SV (CRT) - $650
Sound Card - Creative Labs Audigy 2 - $72
Speakers - Logitech Z-680 - $289
Hard Drive - WD Raptor 74GB SATA - $305 (Axion Technologies)
CD-RW - Plextor Premium 52x32x52x - $100
PSU - Antec TrueControl 550 - $133
Case - Thermaltake Xaser III 2420U - $189

All prices include shipping where applicable.

system will want the latest and fastest available. So, it's...

heatsink, mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner, DVD player and/or RW, floppy drive
or any of a number of other things somebody may want. Nor did I list the
suggested TFT monitor (Sharp LL-T202B) which I couldn't find for sale anywhere I
looked. A similar 20" Sharp TFT (LL-T2010W) is $1627 not including shipping.

Anyway, the grand total is... <drumroll>

$3489!!!

An Athlon FX51 would beat that setup believe it or not.

I'm just looking for what people recommend to be the 'best' components, I'm

If PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World are available there, they also list a
"Power Rig" or "Dream System" each issue, consisting of top components that
work together. There might be similar magazines if you don't get those.

Check SharkyExtreme. They have build-component lists for extreme
machines, as well as "best bang for the buck" systems.
