Dear Richard,
there are thousands of reasons, why Outlook could hang.
To find out if Outlook is the reason or any other additional program (addin)
I prefer to deactivate all Outlook addin and addons and if this would not
help I would start Outlook in a "safe" mode:

Also Exchange could be the reason, so you could create a seperate local
Outlook profile to start Outlook without Exchange, only to see if Exchange
occurs this problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918/en-us
Also the Windows installation could be the reason. All Outlook addins, virus
protection software, Exchange Server installation or the Windows network
could be the reason.
