I find outlook 2002 on this laptop. I'm not ready to upgrade office yet.
What's my best option? Can I just buy something prior to the newest MS
offering like maybe outlook 2006 ??
My aim is to be able to archive old records / folders in such a fashion as
they may be accessible if necessary.

After Outlook 2002 was 2003, which was replaced by 2007. Maybe you can find
a copy of 2003 somewhere, like Amazon.

You "found" Outlook 2002 on a laptop. Sounds like you bought a laptop
which included a polluted hard drive but did not get legitimate
licenses for all the software that was left on that hard drive.

So do you need support for Microsoft's Deltasync proprietary e-mail
protocol to access a freebie Hotmail account? If you have a paid
Hotmail account or you have e-mail accounts elsewhere, any e-mail
client that supports the RFC-standardized POP, IMAP, and SMTP mail
protocols will be sufficient to do your e-mail work.

AutoArchive is a feature in many versions of Outlook, not just the last
version. Outlook 2002 includes auto-archiving. If you want to view
those old .pst archive files inside of Outlook, use the File -> Open
menu.

The version prior to 2007 for Outlook was version 2003. A lot of users
don't like the new UI in OL2007 plus there are some lingering defects
in OL2007 that really should've been addressed by now but haven't. So
there is still a lot of demand for the OL2003 version when you visit
eBay and search on completed auctions to see what prices that OL2003
sold for. So what prevents you from continuing to use your "found"
copy of OL2002?

My laptop runs XP and outlook 2002.
This task began as a learning process regarding archiving the .pst file and
all the old folders. I found very little information in the help files that
I could understand.
Looking here in MS arena I saw lots of messages complaining about OUTlook
2003's problems. I decided - maybe wrongly - that my copy of 2002 had even
more troubles so began a little investigation about upgrading.

2002 is working ok for me and I stilldon't understand archiving. I see that
there is an "archive" folder on my system and am pretty sure that
auto-archive is turned off.

Question: Can I just copy outlook.pst off to a user folder and then open it
later if I need to reference any old mail? THen I'd assume I could just
delete all the individual messages that now occupy space inside .pst

Why not continue to use Outlook 2002 if you have no compelling business
reason to use a later version?

I'd recommend that you continue to use what you have.

Absolutely. Just make sure Outlook is closed when you make the copy.
