What is the best, free, drive cloning program for Windows XP Home
SP3? I want to make an exact copy of a 5400 rpm 2TB Western digital
drive to a 7200 rpm 2TB Hitachi drive. Since the two drives are the
same size, this should not be too difficult.

The drive to be copied has two NTFS partitions. The drive has my
Windows XP Home SP3 installation on it. I need to have the copied
drive boot up to Windows. Thank you in advance for all replies.

After I kick it, he will sometimes play with it for a few
seconds to several minutes. His favorite are the ones that
rattle. He'll play with any ball that makes noise.

WD has a free copy of Acronis True Image.

Since one of your drives is a WD, it should do the clone ok.

Clonezilla works well for cloning Windows systems. The main limitation
is that it will not resize partitions, you need to do that before or
after using Clonezilla. Also it is menu-driven rather than "point 'n click."
(After booting up it basically asks a bunch of stupid questions and you
give it a bunch of stupid answers.)

That would be an incorrect belief. I can confirm that the WD version
of Acronis will work if only one drive is a WD HD as I've used it in
my system and I only have one WD drive.

XXClone. Maybe not the fastest one out there, but it looks like it's the
most reliable, as it operates under Windows itself while copying. So you
have the benefit of Windows monitoring the drive operations rather than
some proprietary mini-OS.

Shouldnt matter .I used the software to copy 1.5 TB Seagate drive to a WD
elements 2TB external drive. I just tried it in reverse as a test and it
works both ways.

No its not.

So does Acronis True Image when its doing the clone at the Win level.

When TI does the clone from what it calls a rescue CD, its using linux
as the OS, not 'some proprietary mini-

All versions of acronis do. And when its not using Win, it uses
Linux like when you do the clone from what it calls a rescue
CD which can be used for a lot more than just rescues, you
can do all the backup/restore/clone ops from that too.

It's possible that Folkert Rienstra may have disappeared from
Usenet - and earth, itself - in 2008, because the supposedly
"dead" bear was still alive!

That daffy Dutchman always had strange tastes, I fear.
