Can someone tell me which of these (you can probably tell I'n no tecchie) is a better (faster) way of connecting to the inetrnet. Its just that I'm on BT broadband but don't feel its as fast as it should be. I checked the properties of my connection and its lisetd as 64k digital using ".ISDN Channel" whatever they are

Basically, am i getting the most out of my broadband in terms of my connection hardware (Alcatel Speedtouch a.k.a."green tadpole"

For the benefit of non UK residents, BT = British Telecom, the main phone
company in the UK.

I recently got ADSL with BT including a USB modem. Mine also says it's ISDN
and reports the connection speed as 576k. In theory the download speed is
512K (bits per sec) and the upload speed is 256K (bits per sec). So I don't
know why it says 576 (= 512+64).

If your 64K is bytes per second that would be about right (8 x 64 = 512),
but if it's bits per second then that isn't right.

Find a UK web site that lets you do a speed test. I found one at the weekend
but have forgotten the URL. When I tested mine I was getting about 80% of
the max values.

www.bandwidthplace.com an american site that states that it may not be very
accurate of non US tests (though I think they are fairly accurate) or
www.adslguide.org.uk

If the router is free-standing, that will be preferable since
connections don't depend on another computer sharing and having to be
powered for other computers. Neither will provide a materially better
connection than the other. IMO. YMMW.

Also, please don't put the question in the subject. It make
understanding the problem difficult since we tend to forget what is in
the there and the body then seems irrelevant.
